Instructor: Marilyn Talley
Marilyn was born in Pennsylvania, lived in Mississippi, and Florida. Before going to college in North Carolina where she became interested in quilting. After college she lived in Alaska for 5 years then moved to California. While in California she continued working on her first big quilt project. And attended a Job Fair in 1999 for a new Joann's Fabric and Craft store. Where she was asked to teach quilting. For the next 5 years she taught patchwork, applique', quilting and binding. She came back to the south to be near to her family. And has taught her sister and her daughter in-law the basics of quilting and some fancy patchwork.
The quilt below was exhibited at the library last year, as part of the show by the Livingston Parish Traditional and Contemporary Quilters Guild.
2012 Quilt Essentials
Students - Grade 3 - Adult

All classes are designed to be 3 classes per series

1st Class - Squares & Rectangles
Learn some basic quilting patches that require only straight line cutting and sewing. Learn "Strip Piecing" where you sew long strips together then cut them into smaller units that are now pre-sewn. Put our shapes and units into Rail Fence blocks, Nine-Patch Blocks and Four Patch blocks and learn a simple quilt design using 4 patches and squares that can be assembled several different ways.
Supplies Needed: Bring at LEAST 2 fabrics you like, a dark & a light. 4 to 6 is better. Needs to be a 1/4 yard of each fabric, Rotary Cutter if you have one, with a ruler and a mat. Sewing machine if you have one that is portable, scissors and thread.
2nd Class - Triangles
Learn to make triangles, make great bunches of triangles already sewn into squares, and triangles for borders. Use these Triangles in the border of the "On Point" quilt design from class #1 to create a straight border. Learn the commercial products available to make triangles easier. Learn to combine the 1/2 square triangles into the "Flying Geese" Patch.
Supplies Needed: Bring at LEAST 2 fabrics you like, a dark & a light. 4 to 6 is better. Needs to be a 1/4 yard of each fabric, Rotary Cutter if you have one, with a ruler and a mat. Sewing machine if you have one that is portable, scissors and thread.
3rd Class - Quilting and Binding
Learn to finish a quilt. Learn several ways to quilt small blocks and join them after being quilted. Learn to "Free Motion" quilt using your own home sewing machine. Learn to quilt straight lines with a walking foot. Learn to bind a quilt with its own backing. Learn to add a separate binding strip around your quilted quilt.
Supplies Needed: Bring muslin, batting and fabric for a 2 foot square practice sample. Batting is available as "Craft Batts" in sizes for crib quilts and other non-bed quilt uses. "Cheater Cloth" is fabric printed to look like patchwork. this could fill in for your quilt top, practice quilting around the shapes. Muslin is that cream color or white non-printed fabric often used as background or backing fabric.

Log Cabin Block
Learn to make log cabin blocks by sewing strips and then units from these strips to new strips to work in the spiral design that makes these blocks. Learn the simple differences in color and sequence that makes the Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps, Half Log Cabin, and Pinwheel designs.

Flying Geese 5 Ways
Learn what a Flying Geese patch is and how to combine them into blocks. Then learn 5 different ways to make them popularized by several well known TV quilt show hosts. The 3-D, one seam version by Ricky Tims, the Odd Stacked version by Eleanor Burns, the Simple Stack version by Georgia Bonesteel, combining 1/2 Square Triangles, used by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter, and the Foundation Piecing version necessary to mix several size in one block or quilt.

Crazy Flannel 9- Patch
This class is a way of making a crazy quilt with only 4 cuts to the fabric. Cutting through 9 fabrics at a time makes it easy to join different colored pieces together. This method works for making for making 9, 9-patch blocks or 9 different 10, 9-patch blocks of 2 colors. The method also works to make stars, which I have done, and other shapes.
Dates: February 29, Wednesday 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
March 24, Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
April 28, Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
Supplies Needed: At least 2 different fabrics, a dark and a light 1 1/4 yard of each. Makes a simple 9 patch design. Or 9 squares of fabric 15" x 15". I recommend 3 prints, 3 stripes or plaids, and 3 mostly solid. Rotary Cutter if you have one, with a ruler and a mat. Sewing machine if you have one that is portable, scissors and thread.
